Helvetica the Movie notes

  • Where does Helvetica originate from? What country? 
  • Helvetica originated in Switzerland.
  • What does the original name mean? What is it's translation in English? 
  • THe original name was Die Neue Haus Grotesk, then Helvetzia, the latin word for Switzerland. Helvetica translates to " The Swiss Typeface"
  • What year was Helvetica created? 
  • It was created in 1957
  • What is the design style that Helvetica brought to popularity worldwide? 
  • Swiss design was brought to the world at large by Helvetica.
  • List the names of 3 different design styles or design movements that are discussed in the film. 
  • Classical-Modernism, Post-Modernism, and Grunge Typography were discussed.
  • Write about some of the insight about design you have taken away from the film. You can provide quotes if you like. 
  • " You can recognize Marlboro from miles away because of that stupid typeface"
  • Where can examples of Helvetica be seen? Can you spot some examples on our own campus? Use your camera and take a picture of a few examples and include in your blog post.
